My Musical Journey thus far...
My name is Naboth RIZLA from Zimbabwe's City Of Kings (Bulawayo). I am a Hip hop artist currently working on my debut Album titled The Grind Never Sleeps due for release in 2020. With my love and passion for music I hope one day to use it to "run my very own media corporation" in the near future -Southern Eye Newspapers
Brief Music Background and influences:
Naboth RIZLA started rapping at the age of 16 in the year 2000 through freestyling and ciphering with other artists at Plumtree High School in Zimbabwe. He then worked with Lyrical Insane a talented emcee/producer on Lyrical Insane's first EP titled Born 2 Reign which was released in 2005. In that same year (2005) he worked on a compilation with an independent record label from the U.S.A. It was produced by a talented beat-smith (Face for Face The Music) and the most skilful artists from the City of Kings (Bulawayo, Zimbabwe) were part of it. The world was blessed by a memorable compilation album that you can get at www.cdbaby.com/facethemusic later that year (2005) Naboth RIZLA put together his clothing line which is an array of street fashion that the Hip Hop culture will identify with. The clothing label is called Grapevine Clothing now available online at www.nabothrizla.com/store As a writer he has contributed to South Africa's number 1 Hip Hop magazine known as Hype Magazine www.hypemagazine.co.za since 2007 to 2016 and in 2011 had a Hip Hop Column on a daily newspaper in Zimbabwe. He also contributed to other publications from all over the world such as www.worldhiphopmarket.com (USA) and http://www.hiphoplifeandtimes.com/ (UK). Since 2012 he runs monthly Hip Hop events that have evolved from Da Big Launch (concert series), Flow Sessions (Open Mic Weekly) and now DGV Rap Battles (monthly).
Work with SKR:
In 2005 Naboth RIZLA came together with Spinx an emcee and Kompozitioner a producer to form the crew SKR which would release a mixtape titled Gold Tapes Vol1 in 2011. He would go on to perform with this crew in September 2012 at the Shoko Festival an International platform in Harare (Zimbabwe) alongside Michael Crenshaw from USA. Their song BYO (Bulawayo) was released as part of the AFCON (African Cup Of Nations) soccer showcase music compilation for March 2013 featuring heavyweights like HHP (Hip Hop Panstula from South Africa).
Work with Kings Kraal Republic:
Early 2011 Naboth RIZLA came together with Tswarelo Mothobi an emcee/producer and Trevor Ncube a videographer/emcee to form the collective Kings Kraal Republic. Later in September 2011 he would perform with KKR on stage at the Shoko Festival sharing the same stage with Hired Gun from USA.
Work as an artist manager:
In 2012 and 2013 Naboth RIZLA would manage two artists namely Mac (Music Above Cash) a Bulawayo emcee/producer and Maestro The IV (now known as The IV) also from Bulawayo who is an emcee/producer as well. He would take these guys to shows in Zimbabwe namely in Hwange, Victoria Falls, Bulawayo and most notably the Shoko Festival 2013 edition in Zimbabwe's capital city Harare. He would also not only get their music play listed on radio stations in Zimbabwe and worldwide but get them noticed through numerous appearances in the media getting them lots of publicity.
Work as DGV Rap Battles Founder/Host:
Da-Grape-Vine Rap Battles are a series of monthly Spoken Word/Hip Hop events which were founded and are hosted by Naboth RIZLA. They were started in August 2013 with support from Naboth RIZLA’s clothing brand known as Grapevine Clothing which runs www.da-grape-vine.com a hip hop website based in Bulawayo (Zimbabwe). The website promotes Hip Hop Culture from Bulawayo to the rest of the world as a means of showcasing to the rest of the world what Zimbabwe has to offer through Spoken Word and other Hip Hop elements. The DGV Rap Battles have taken place in Bulawayo and Harare and are soon to expand to the rest of the continent as we continue to grow the Rap Battle and spoken Word culture in Africa having being featured at Shoko Festival 2015 in Chitungwiza performing to over 2000 people and Intwasa Arts Festival in Bulawayo the same year. In October 2016 & 2017 the DGV Rap battles made an appearance on Zimbabwe’s National TV (ZTV) via Hip Hop 263 TV show a first time in Zimbabwe.
In 2018 DGV Rap Battles were in full force putting together a league that would see memorable battles like when Jilly Tha Black (Bulawayo) faced M.E.T.H (Mutare) on the 30th June 2018 at the Bulawayo Public Library. We would be back on the 14th of July 2018 at the same venue for a jaw-dropping performance when Luminous faced Sik-abe. Luminous pulled out all stops in his first battle showing how a Gospel Rapper can also take it there. Then on the 28th of July 2018 Sik-abe battled M1 in a somewhat balanced battle before the hyped up Battle of the sexes took to the stage in the form of Llady Eef VS Blues-King and yes it lived up to the buzz. On the 1st September 2018 we had to postpone our first ever Namibia VS Zimbabwe DGV Rap Battle for the 6th of October 2018 at the YWCA (9th Ave & Lobengula) opposite Convent School in Bulawayo but still that was not enough as the Namibians still didn’t show up siting logistics failure. Finally on the 27th October 2018 we had our very first International Battle held at the Bold & Beautiful Hair Salon (Between 11 & 12 Ave) in Bulawayo. The battle was themed Scissors & Clippers Vol1 with the main battle having Llady Eef (ZIMBABWE) VS Enigma Tsiako (BOTSWANA). Definitely a great battle worth checking out that made history for the league not just as our first International Battle but also because it was our first all-female DGV Rap Battle. Big shout out to Enigma Tsiako from Botswana for coming to Bulawayo (Zimbabwe) to make the event happen and doing the best she can considering that it was her first time ever to Rap Battle. We hope to have more of these in 2019.
